Who suffers from a chronic illness is well aware that taking the medicines at pre-established times and in the correct amounts is not always easy. Problem solved thanks to a new type of sensors embedded in a pill to swallow.
These sensors are the first devices that can be assumed by the oral route approved by the Food and Drug American. The pill which contains them, in essence, transmits medical data from within the body to a mobile phone.
The sensor, made by California-based company Proteus Digital Health, is the size of a grain of sand and consists of a tiny chip containing magnesium and copper traces. When swallowed generates a slight electrical voltage which carries a signal towards the surface of the skin where a patch sends the information to the smartphone of the treating physician.
Within a few minutes the microscopic tablet dissolves, leaving only the minerals in the body aforesaid. The ultimate aim is, by the physician, to take appropriate action if the medicine is not taken properly, possibly correcting the dose or replacing it.
